Anticipating Heaven is Here!

Dear Friends,
Today is a special day that I’ve been eagerly awaiting and praying over for quite some time. My new book, Anticipating Heaven, is officially out in the world! I can hardly believe this moment is here, and I am so grateful to finally be able to share it with you.
This book has been one of the most meaningful journeys of my life, and its beginnings were deeply personal. It was inspired by a moment with one of my dear patients who was in her final days. As we spoke about her approaching death, I found myself grieving, caught between my role as doctor and feeling my own sense of loss. But she looked at me with a sincere smile and said, “It’s okay, it will be a good death.” Her peace and confidence in those words stayed with me, consoling me in my grief, and they began to stir something within my soul.
That encounter planted the seed for this book. I pondered, “What does it mean to die a “good death?” And how can we, who are still living, prepare ourselves and our loved ones for that moment with grace and intention? The more I contemplated this question, the greater clarity I discovered about life. A good death is not an event, it is a lifestyle.
To end well is a journey that truly begins with the confidence of knowing our destination. My patient had hope because of her faith in Christ. This lifestyle of faith helps us survive through the hard hard. It helps us flourish in the easy easy. And it also helps us live abundantly in the mundane, the days that slip by and which we barely remember the day after. My patient lived anticipating heaven.
I reflected on my three decades of medical practice in hospitals and remembered those hard but Holy moments before last breaths. I considered my personal confidence in my destination, but wondered, “What about when I receive the diagnosis that is dreaded? How do I get to my ending that is good while still facing the journey through dying?”.
As I prayed and asked God for discernment around these questions, I recalled the lessons I was taught by patients through the years and began to write them down. What helped their bodies, minds, and souls, and what hurt? I sensed God’s intimate presence and design from the patient who inspired this journey to the ones who came before and after. These lessons were not my own, but meant to be shared.
Anticipating Heaven was born from these reflections as I desired to walk alongside those who I may never meet but desperately wanted to help.
Throughout the pages of Anticipating Heaven, I explore the practical wisdom you need to navigate our very complex healthcare systems. I share the importance of having a medical plan and the nuances which arrive even despite a plan. I equip you with the questions you need to ask and which are the two most important. I share the principles for finding
the right doctor, hospitals, and end-of-life care options. Each of these will help you cope. But the greater gift found in Anticipating Heaven is hope.
And don’t we all need hope?
Let’s do this together because you matter to me, you matter to others, but most important, you matter to God!
Several key concepts that I hope will be both comforting and challenging:
1. Facing Mortality with Confidence: We often avoid thinking about our mortality, but there is a peace that comes from being prepared. I discuss how we can approach this topic without fear but with faith and assurance. By knowing where we’re headed and who we’ll be with, we can face the end of life with quiet confidence.
2. Living a Life of Purpose: Preparing for heaven is not just about the moment we pass to meet Jesus but about how we live now. Are we living intentionally, loving deeply, and serving wholeheartedly? Are we doing the inner work needed to heal old wounds and build lasting relationships? I guide you through reflections and stories that invite you to live each day with a greater sense of purpose.
3. Leaving a Legacy of Love: Part of preparing for heaven is also preparing to leave a legacy. What will we leave behind for our loved ones? This goes beyond finances or possessions—it’s about the memories, values, and faith we instill in those we love. I share practical steps on how to communicate your wishes, share your stories, and pass on your wisdom.
4. Finding Comfort in Community: None of us are meant to walk this journey alone. I emphasize the importance of community, whether it’s through a church group, close friends, or even this online community. Together, we can encourage each other, pray for one another, and be reminded that we are never alone—even in our final moments.
