From First Diagnosis to Final Breath—The Ministry of Presence

Every church is filled with stories we may never fully know—people who have just received life-changing diagnoses, families grappling with the slow reality of terminal illness, and caregivers silently carrying the weight of what comes next. These moments are sacred, and they require something far deeper than quick answers. They call for presence.

In his compassionate essay Caring for the Mind and Soul, Dr. Rick Cantrell describes the emotional and spiritual unraveling that can follow a diagnosis. Whether someone is facing a chronic condition or the final chapter of their life, they are often disoriented—struggling to make sense of their identity, their future, and their faith.

What they need first is not solutions, but someone who sees them—an empathetic witness to their fear, their grief, and their questions. In my work at the bedside, I’ve found that true healing begins not with medicine, but with the quiet gift of being seen and heard.

As the diagnosis progresses—especially when it becomes terminal—our role as pastors and faith leaders shifts. The calling becomes less about guiding someone toward healing and more about walking with them toward peace. We offer dignity, presence, and help them explore what matters most: reconciliation, meaning, and the assurance that they are not alone.

That’s why I wrote Anticipating Heaven. It’s a gentle and practical resource designed to equip both pastors and lay leaders to walk with others through the hardest moments of life. It’s full of Scripture, stories, and simple tools that help the Church offer more than sympathy—we offer hope.

If you’re a ministry leader looking to strengthen your care ministries, I would love to connect. Anticipating Heaven is being used in churches across the country to support grieving families, prepare lay caregivers, and bring peace to those who are facing the end of life.

Because when someone is walking through suffering, what they remember most is who showed up—and how. Let’s be that kind of Church. To learn about how you can implement this much-needed ministry in your church, book a call with me.

With all my heart & here for you,
Dr. Pamela
